Welcome or our FAQ!
Who is the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ)?
We are a mainline Protestant denomination with 3700 congregations in the United
States and Canada. Most Christian Churches, as is true with Southport Christian
Church, has represented in its membership people from a variety of Christian
expressions. Often Disciple congregations serve as a bridge church for couples raised
in differing traditions and belief systems that are represented in out congregation
embracing the belief that God's voice is better found in the variety of theological
expressions than in a rigid and singular test of faith.
What do I need to know about the practice of communion?
Southport Christian Church offers a communion to all believers in Jesus Christ
at every worship service. You do not need to be a member of our church to participate.
The act of receiving communion is the central feature of all worship expressions at
Southport as it is at the table where we are all strengthened and empowered for
the faith journey we are all called to take.
What about giving
The practice of giving is a faith discipline that we all need to pursue. Giving is so much more than
underwriting the church's ministry, it also strengthens the faith of the one who gives. We encourage all
believers to consider the biblical principle of tithing, which means giving at least 10% of your income
to the church, but we also celebrate all gifts knowing that the practice of this discipline is a lifetime journey.
How do I join Southport
People may join Southport through a confession of faith in Jesus Christ and baptism, or through a
reaffirmation of faith and a transfer of membership (this applies to those who have already been baptized
and who have been a member of another church). Even though it is not essential, we encourage people
considering membership to talk to one of our ministers about the process and get answers to any
questions you might have.
What is expected of me as a member?
Member means different things to different people. You can be a member by simply joining.
Once you are a member you remain a member for your entire life or until you ask to be taken from the
rolls. What we would hope membership means to you is regular worship participation, giving
(not only money but time as well), participation in Christian Education or in a small group,
and a serious attempt to grow your faith
What can I expect from Southport?
We owe it to you to provide a place where your needs can be met, where your God given
gifts can be identified, where worship feeds you and instructs you in the faith, and
where you can live out your particular ministry with the support you need. You can
expect Southport to be a warm and safe environment, but also one that challenges you in
your journey of faith.
